VeraCrypt
FreeFree open-source disk encryption tool for creating encrypted volumes and encrypting whole partitions.
About VeraCrypt
VeraCrypt is a free, open-source disk encryption program for Windows, macOS and Linux. It descends from TrueCrypt and is developed by IDRIX. It creates encrypted containers that act like virtual drives, and it can encrypt entire partitions or drives, including the system drive on Windows.
Data is encrypted and decrypted on the fly, so files are protected whenever the volume is not mounted. Options include several encryption algorithms, hidden volumes for plausible deniability and keyfiles as an additional factor. The project has had independent security audits and fixed the issues they raised.
VeraCrypt suits people who need strong, transparent protection for sensitive files on laptops or external drives and are comfortable with a fairly technical interface. It is free to use. The winget manifest lists the Apache 2.0 licence, though the project also includes parts under other licences, so check the licence file. It is not a cloud tool, and if you forget your password or lose your keyfile, the data cannot be recovered. There is no mobile app.
Back up your volume header and keep your password safe. Lost passwords cannot be recovered.
