Proton Mail
FreeAn encrypted email service from Proton, based in Switzerland, with free and paid plans.
About Proton Mail
Proton Mail is an end-to-end encrypted email service from Proton AG, which is based in Switzerland. Messages between Proton users are encrypted automatically, and messages to other providers can be protected with a password or sent with standard encryption. The company states that it cannot read your mailbox.
The service has apps for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux, along with a web app and a Bridge tool for connecting to desktop mail clients on paid plans. Proton also offers calendar, drive, VPN and password manager products. A free plan has limited storage, and paid plans add storage, custom domains and more features. Specific prices are not in the supplied data.
It suits people who want private email with open source apps and independent audits, and who accept paying for the full service. Because it encrypts, some search features are more limited than regular webmail. An account with Proton is required. Google Play lists more than 10 million downloads.
The free plan is a good test drive. Mail sent to non-Proton users is not end-to-end encrypted unless you use password protection.
