About lichess
Lichess is a chess server and mobile app run by volunteers and funded by donations. It describes itself as free and open source, and Google Play states that players complete over five million games every day.
The mobile app lets you play online with a wide range of time controls, solve puzzles, analyse games and practise against the computer. The latest App Store notes mention chess basics lessons, a practice feature, new translations and bug fixes. The service is known for having no advertising and no paid features, which sets it apart from many commercial rivals.
It suits chess players who want a straightforward, free experience, from beginners to serious club players. Because it is volunteer-run, the app can feel plainer than commercial alternatives and may lag behind the website in features. Donations are optional. If you already play on the website, your account carries over to the app, so you can switch between them freely and keep your game history in one place.
If a feature seems missing from the app, try the website, which is the most complete version.
