About darktable
darktable is an open source photography workflow application and raw developer. It manages a library of photos on your computer and lets you develop raw files with non-destructive editing, so your original files stay untouched.
It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and offers tools for exposure, colour, tone, masking, lens corrections and exporting. Photos are organised in a lighttable view and edited in a darkroom view. Version 5.6.2 has release notes that mostly point to documentation updates, including a versioned user manual.
The winget manifest lists the GPL-3.0 licence. darktable is free, with no account or subscription. It suits photographers who shoot raw and want a Lightroom-style workflow without cost. It has a steep learning curve and uses a different vocabulary from commercial tools, so expect to read the manual. Hardware with a capable graphics card helps with performance. Presets and styles let you reuse looks across many photos, which speeds up editing large batches from events or travel shoots.
Start with the scene-referred workflow described in the manual rather than copying older tutorials.
